The landscape regeneration proposals for the Merstham Recreation Ground are designed to enhance the current green space that serves the local community, providing a diverse range of facilities and uses for people of all ages and abilities set within a framework that allows future adaption and interventions to take place.
The central hub area was designed following extensive community consultation and participation particularly with local school children. A new feature play area, parkour space, youth shelter, gym and community orchards are focussed around a pavilion and refreshment kiosk, creating a new heart to the Recreation Ground. The new framework of routes respond to desire lines, providing safe, clear movement into and across the site, aiding legibility.
Enhancement to local ecology and biodiversity are central to the design, as is providing access to nature for the users of the Rec. New woodland copses, playful swales and access to a new water course are all new features that users will be able to enjoy. Working with Surrey County Council to develop the SuDS strategy, the proposals will become a flagship project for the county in using local green infrastructure to alleviate local surface water flooding issues.
